Membership Criteria

The membership criteria is dependent on the level of membership required and determines the level of membership that you are eligible to apply for.

Student Membership

Student membership is designed to target university students (>18 years old) who are in full time education and who are studying forensic science or related subjects (i.e. Biology, Chemistry etc) and have an interest in Forensic science. The criteria for student membership is as follows.

Educational Experience

Occupational Experience

Applicants undertaking full time undergraduate or postgraduate instruction in forensic science or a related discipline

Affiliate Membership

Affiliate membership is designed to target individuals who are involved in advancing the study and application of forensic science, including those following related career paths (i.e. police officers, lawyers etc) and those who have an interest in forensic science, but are not actively involved in forensic casework. The criteria for affiliate membership is as follows.

Educational Experience

Occupational Experience

Applicants holding an undergraduate or postgraduate degree from a recognised institution in science or other subject related to the practice of forensic science

OR

Applicants having relevant qualifications or experience as deemed acceptable by the Council of the Forensic Science Society

Professional Membership

Professional membership is designed for forensic practitioners who have relevant qualifications and a minimum of 3 years experience working in the forensic arena. Award of this membership category entitles the member to use the postnominal 'MFSSoc' in addition to extra benefits. The criteria for professional membership is as follows.

Educational Experience

Occupational Experience

Applicants holding an undergraduate or postgraduate degree from a recognised institution in science or other subject related to the practice of forensic science

OR

Applicants holding appropriate national qualifications (such as HND, crime scene diplomas, Forensic Science Society diplomas etc.) in subjects relevant to forensic science practice

OR

Applicants having relevant qualifications or experience as deemed acceptable by the Council of the Forensic Science Society

Applicants who can demonstrate a professional practice in forensic science and related disciplines either in sole practice or as a member of a larger organisation for a period of not less than two years

OR

A minimum of three years experience as a trainer, lecturer, senior lecturer, reader or professor at a recognised institution or training provider and involved in the delivery of forensic science courses or related material, and either a publication and research record in the area of forensic science which has made a contribution to the field or a continuing involvement in professional forensic casework

Managers etc, who are involved in developing policy and implementing standards in forensic practice

Fellowship

Fellowship is a category reserved for individuals who have qualifications and experience, which is considered by the council to be exceptional. The criteria for fellowship is as follows.

Educational Experience

Occupational Experience

Applicants holding an undergraduate or postgraduate degree from a recognised institution in science or other subject related to the practice of forensic science

OR

Applicants holding appropriate national qualifications (such as HND, crime scene diplomas, Forensic Science Society diplomas etc) in subjects relevant to forensic science practice.

OR

Applicants having relevant qualifications or experience as deemed acceptable by the Council of the Forensic Science Society

An individual who has achieved distinction in forensic science and related areas over a significant period

This may include:

Extensive casework experience

Significant contribution to research and development

Significant contribution to policy or practice

Extensive peer recognition

Has gained offices of distinction eg, in the Society or other professional bodies, committees etc

Significant qualifications:
