What’s Inside your Firearm?
What’s Inside your Firearm?
Rachel Bolton - King, Lecturer, Staffordshire University
Nottinghamshire Police are recovering firearms that have been buried for significant periods of time and are consequently highly corroded and seized, some to the extent where the firearm manufacturer and model are no longer recognisable. These firearms pose a significant problem to officers prior to submitting for laboratory examination; are the weapons clear and what forensic value could they hold?
Examination typically involves lengthy and destructive preparation to yield an answer. However, this paper details the use of a rapid and non-destructive x-ray based system for the examination of firearm internal components.

Antique Firearms and the Law
Antique Firearms and the Law
Bill Harriman, Independent Firearms Expert, J W F Harriman Firearms Advisory Group
Section 58(2) Firearms Act 1968 provides that an antique firearm kept as a curiosity or ornament is exempt from provisions of Firearms Acts. The imposition of mandatory custodial sentences in 2004 for possession of prohibited weapons has resulted in increasing claims of the 58(2) exemption by Defendants. Firearms forensic examiners are routinely asked to advise whether an old firearm is an antique. No legal definition of antique firearm exists and assistance from case law is limited.

Usefulness of a Shared European Ballistics Image
A Discussion on the Usefulness of a Shared European Ballistics Image Database
Mark Mastaglio, Consultant Forensic Scientist The Forensic Firearms Consultancy
Most European countries now use some automated comparison system to search their national Open Case Files (OCF). Globalisation of crime and the diminishing of border controls have made a unified European ballistic image database seem logical. This presentation critically considers the requirements and possible outcomes of such an approach. Based on the experience of forensic practitioners from the ENFSI (European Network of Forensic Institutes) community it seems probable that a shared European electronic ballistic system will be of very limited value at present.
