FSSoc Annual Essay Competition

The FSSoc hosts an annual essay competition for student members of the society and the winner is awarded the JB Firth prize.

THIS AWARD IS CURRENTLY SUSPENDED

The annual JB Firth essay competition is open to all students who are currently studying on any full-time or part-time graduating course at a recognised institute of higher education anywhere in the world.

The term ‘Student’ includes any person worldwide currently studying on any full-time or part-time graduating course at a recognised institute of higher education. The student must be in the penultimate or final year of their studies when the essay is submitted.

The course of study must include an identifiable unit of learning relating entirely to forensic science or forensic medicine and science combined, equivalent to at least 40 hours of lectures.

How the competition works:

The essay title changes every year, and is usually based on an issue that is topical in the forensic arena. The essay should be between 5,000 and 7,000 words and written in English.

The essay must be accompanied by a statement signed by the student and a course tutor confirming that the work is that of the student. The essay must also be accompanied by a copy of the student's registration document and a course outline showing the course hours and curriculum for the forensic science content.

A hard copy of the essay and accompanying documentation must be sent to the FSSoc offices by the closing date, which is 31 March each year.

Once the essays are received, an adjudication panel is appointed by the chair of the qualifications committee and a decision reached on the most meritorious entry.

JB Firth Prize

The winner is awarded the JB Firth prize of £200 pounds and a set of Forensic Science text books published by Elsevier. The prize is awarded each year at the AGM annual dinner and the winning essay will be published in Science and Justice.
